Addiction psychiatrist David Sack, MD, and renowned author, speaker and founder of the Sexual Recovery Institute, Robert Weiss, LCSW, CSAT-S, will speak at the 1st International Conference on Sex and Love Addiction in Brooklyn, NY.

Brooklyn, NY (PRWEB) March 29, 2013 – From April 4-6, addiction and mental health professionals, physicians, psychologists, marriage, family and sex therapists, educators, social workers and other health care professionals from around the world will gather in Brooklyn, NY, for the 1st International Conference on Sex and Love Addiction. Robert Weiss, LCSW, CSAT-S, founder of the Sexual Recovery Institute and Senior Vice President of Clinical Development at Elements Behavioral Health, will be one of the speakers at the conference.

On April 6, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Mr. Weiss will provide a conference Keynote session regarding the effect of evolving technology and social media on human intimacy, sexuality, fidelity and relationships. Titled “Sex, Tech, Intimacy and Infidelity: The Effect of Social Media and Technology on Cheating, Intimacy Disorders and Sex Addiction,” the presentation will explore problems related to a wide range of online sexual and romantic behavior as well as smartphone hook-ups, porn abuse and anonymous sex.

“The easy accessibility of social networks, adultery websites, virtual chats, smartphone sex apps and other online media have presented new challenges for those with compulsive and addictive sexual disorders,” said Mr. Weiss. “Getting educated about the assessment and treatment of these disorders, which often co-occur with drug and alcohol addictions as well as other addictive behaviors, will help clinicians be more effective in their practices.”

Later that afternoon, from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., Mr. Weiss will lead a session that addresses the identification, treatment and management of sexual addiction in the gay male community. As the author of Cruise Control: Understanding Sexual Addiction in Gay Men and Untangling the Web: Sex and Fantasy Addictions in the Digital Age and a clinician who has specialized in working with sexually addicted clients and their spouses for over 22 years, Mr. Weiss has designed this training to provide insight and practical approaches to those providing clinical care to gay men and their spouses.

Also joining Mr. Weiss and the esteemed panel of speakers, which includes Patrick J. Carnes, PhD, internationally recognized speaker and author on sex addiction, is David Sack, MD, the CEO of Elements Behavioral Health. He will be speaking on April 4, from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., about the relationship between hypersexual behaviors and stimulant abuse. Titled “In Search of Rewards: The Overlapping Neurophysiology of Sex and Stimulants,” Dr. Sack’s presentation will address the role of memory and impulsivity in relapse as well as novel treatment strategies.

“There is a significant segment of the substance dependent population that needs treatment that fully addresses not only their drug and alcohol problems but also co-occurring sex, relationship and intimacy disorders as well as other addictive patterns,” said Dr. Sack. “Whereas drug rehab centers that focus on substance abuse alone often inadvertently dismiss related sexual behaviors, increasing the risk of relapse, our approach is to identify and address all of these issues at once and to educate clinicians, clients and families on the complex ways in which these disorders interact.”

The workshops for the 1st International Conference on Sex and Love Addiction will be held at the New York Marriott at the Brooklyn Bridge. Attendees will have the opportunity to network with colleagues, review the latest brain research, and learn about advances in the assessment and treatment of sex and intimacy disorders, while earning up to 18 continuing education credits.
