Long Beach, CA (PRWEB) December 16, 2015 – Robert Weiss, LCSW, CSAT-S, a noted clinician, educator and Senior Vice President of Clinical Development for Elements Behavioral Health, will present a keynote address at the LGBTQ Finding Freedom Symposium held January 15 and 16 at the Riviera Resort Hotel in Palm Springs, California.

The Finding Freedom Symposium brings together nationally recognized leaders to deliver research-based solutions to LGBTQ individuals struggling with addictions and co-occurring disorders as well as the professionals who treat them. The symposium is open to treatment professionals, doctors and therapists and also the community and anyone interested in the issues facing LGBTQ clients. Attendees will participate in integrative workgroup sessions and may earn up to eight continuing education credits.

On January 16, from 8:30am to 10am, Weiss will deliver a keynote address titled “Gay and Lesbian Couples: Equal But Not Yet Free.” Even though marriage equality is now the law of the land, Weiss will explore the issues that continue to be of concern to gay and lesbian people and the long-term solutions needed to help the LGBTQ community, which has sustained an extensive and profound history of individual and community trauma.

“We’ve won some important battles, but there are still enormous challenges ahead,” said Weiss. “We have high rates of drug and sex addiction, mental health issues and domestic violence, and we have special challenges in building intimate relationships. With all the social and technological changes underway, it’s critical that we educate the community and guide treatment professionals toward greater cultural competency and understanding of LGBTQ clients and the unique issues they face.”

Weiss has developed clinical programs for LGBTQI clients at The Right Step® drug rehab in Dallas, Texas as well as sex addiction and intimacy disorder programs at The Ranch treatment center in Tennessee. He is also the author of Sex Addiction 101, Closer Together, Further Apart: The Effect of Technology and the Internet on Parenting, Work, and Relationships and Cruise Control: Understanding Sex Addiction in Gay Men.
