Sexual Recovery Institute Founder Addresses Sex and Tech Addictions at International Addictions Conference in British Columbia

On June 21 and 22, renowned addictions expert, author and clinician Robert Weiss, LCSW, CSAT-S, will speak about the intersection of digital technology and addiction at a leading clinical conference in British Columbia.

Long Beach, CA (PRWEB) May 28, 2013 – On June 21 and 22, 2013, Robert Weiss, LCSW, CSAT-S, author, clinician, founder of the Sexual Recovery Institute and Senior Vice President of Clinical Development for Elements Behavioral Health, will provide training for an audience of addiction and therapy professionals at The Canadian Society of Addiction Medicine conference in Victoria, British Columbia. Addiction and mental health professionals, social workers, physicians, doctors and nurses will gather at the Hotel Grand Pacific to hear some of the world’s leading addiction treatment authors and presenters speak at the conference, themed “Sexual Addiction: Preparing for the Tidal Wave.”

On June 21, from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Weiss will host a workshop titled, “Understanding the Treatment of Sexual Addiction in the Age of Digital Media.” This presentation will explore the effects of online porn, webcams and virtual sexuality on human relationships along with the challenges these technologies pose for people with sex and intimacy disorders and their spouses and partners. Attendees will also gain insight into the history and issues surrounding human sex, dating, parenting and relationships and the “new” meanings of words like relationship, infidelity and personal privacy.

“Sex and intimacy disorders have existed for decades, but the easy accessibility of social networks, adultery websites, virtual chats, smartphone sex apps and other online media are presenting evolving new challenges for those with addictive sexual disorders and for those providing treatment in the 21st century,” Weiss said. “Becoming educated about these disorders and related treatments will help professionals become more effective in their practices and is an essential step to promote healing for these individuals and their loved ones.”

On June 22, from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m., Weiss will deliver the keynote address on “Sex Addiction vs. Sex Offending: Understanding the Disorders.” This talk will describe some of the misconceptions and prejudices surrounding sexual offending (online and in vivo) along with guidelines for effective treatment strategies.
