Sweat lodge therapy is a form of group therapy. It is a structured, guided experience that gives you new insights, encourages spiritual growth, and leaves participants feeling supported and empowered.
A sweat lodge is a small, enclosed structure that is heated with hot stones. Water is poured over the stones to produce steam.
There are typically four phases of the sweat lodge:
A leader will guide you through self-meditation, prayer and/or group discussion during each phase. The transition between each phase is marked by opening the door to the sweat lodge to bring in rejuvenating fresh air, and also to replenish the supply of hot stones and water.
Sweat lodge therapy offers physical and mental benefits. When you sweat, your body naturally detoxes, which can be especially helpful during the early stages of recovery. The mood-enhancing chemicals that your body produces when you exercise may also be released when you sweat.
The sweat lodge can help bring forth habitual responses to difficult feelings. With the counselor’s guidance, you will be in a better position to recognize these habitual responses and replace them with healthier coping mechanisms.
