Elements Behavioral Health fills the gaps in treatment by creating unique programs in unique environments. We partner with clients, their family members and other treatment providers to understand which needs aren’t being adequately addressed, and then develop programs that are carefully designed to meet those needs.

Chris Karkenny

President and Chief Executive Officer

Chris has more than 25 years of experience buying, building and growing healthcare companies, and knows healthcare services and health insurance particularly well. He excels at managing in high-growth environments and has executed turnarounds of both public and private companies.

Chris has served as Operating Partner at Frazier Healthcare Partners since 2015. Prior to joining Frazier, Chris served as Executive Vice President and CFO at Apria Healthcare, a national healthcare services company with more than $2 billion in revenue, 550 locations, and 14,000 employees. While at Apria, he orchestrated a key $350 million acquisition, creating the largest national home infusion company (later sold to CVS Caremark). He led the sale of Apria to The Blackstone Group in a take-private transaction.

Before Apria, Chris served as Senior Vice President of Corporate Development and Finance at PacifiCare Health Systems, a national health plan. He earlier held executive leadership positions at Quarterdeck Corporation, NetCatalyst, and ICS.

Chris holds a BSBA in finance and marketing from the University of Richmond and an MBA from the George L. Graziadio School of Business and Management at Pepperdine University.

David Sack, MD

Vice Chairman and Chief Medical Officer

Dr. Sack is board certified in psychiatry, addiction psychiatry and addiction medicine. He previously served as president of College Health IPA, now the largest behavioral health group in California. Dr. Sack’s prior positions include Senior Vice President of Community Programs for Aspen Education Group, which he grew from a start-up to more than $20 million in annual revenue, and Senior Vice President of Clinical Research for Comprehensive NeuroScience, a CNS-focused site management organization, where he grew his division from $5 million to $30 million in annual revenues.

A sought-after media expert, Dr. Sack has appeared on Dateline NBC, Good Morning America, The Early Show, E! News, The Doctors, and many other outlets. Peter Reynolds, CPA

Chief Financial Officer

Peter is a distinguished finance executive with more than 30 years of experience. Before joining Elements Behavioral Health, Peter served as Managing Partner at Infinity Investors & Management Group and Interim CFO at SC Fuels. He also served as Principal Financial Officer and Chief Accountability Officer at Apria Healthcare, where he helped orchestrate a strategic repositioning of the company through a key $500 million acquisition, and was part of the team in the sale to Blackstone in a take private transaction valued at $1.7B.
Prior to joining Apria, Peter worked at Skilled Healthcare Group, Inc., a California-based public company, in the role of Senior Vice President and Chief Accounting Officer. He has also held positions as Senior Vice President, Corporate Controller of PacifiCare Health Systems, Inc., and Director of Financial Reporting at Foundation Health Corporation. Peter has more than 11 years of public accounting experience at Deloitte & Touche and Ernst & Young, and service as a senior auditor for Blue Cross of California.

Peter holds a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Oregon State University and is a Certified Public Accountant.

Cassandra Loch, LCSW

President of Program Operations

Cassandra is a leader in the behavioral health field, dedicated to changing the ways in which communities access and receive high-quality behavioral health care treatment. Prior to joining Elements Behavioral Health, Cassandra was the President and CEO at Prototypes, a nonprofit dedicated to women who are struggling with addiction, mental health and other issues. There, she oversaw finance, human resources, fundraising, quality improvement, marketing and program operations across 14 locations in Southern California.

Cassandra began her career as a clinical social worker at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, UCLA Medical Center and Providence St. Joseph Medical Center. She then transitioned into leadership and executive roles at PacifiCare Health Systems and United Behavioral Health. Cassandra has served on the boards of the California Association of Alcohol and Drug Programs Executives, the Network for Social Work Managers, and the Association of Community Human Services Organizations. She is on the advisory board for the Center for Leadership and Management at the School of Social Work at Rutgers University.

Cassandra holds a bachelor’s degree in social relations from the University of California, Riverside and a master’s degree in social work from the University of Southern California. She also earned an MBA from the George L. Graziadio School of Business and Management at Pepperdine University.

Rob Mahan

President of Lab Services and Chief Strategy Officer

Rob joined Elements Behavioral Health in 2008 and has nearly two decades of experience in financial operations. He most recently served as Vice President of Finance for DaVita Healthcare Partners, Inc., one of the largest dialysis providers in the U.S., with more than $5.5 billion in annual revenue at the time. While at DaVita, Rob supported five start-up businesses, managed the 900-employee billing and collections team and started an organic-growth team that led to a six-fold increase in new facilities over three years.

Rob holds an MBA from the Anderson School of Management at UCLA.

Nicolas Poan, CPA

Senior Vice President and Chief Accounting Officer

Nick has over 15 years of experience delivering successful business outcomes through finance, operational and administration channels in both public and private companies, most notably in the healthcare services industry. Previously, Nick served as Senior Vice President and Chief Accounting Officer at Envision Healthcare, where he led organizational, financial and system restructuring to achieve strategic objectives and meet targeted financial performance levels. He worked for 10 years at Alliance Healthcare Services, Inc., a diagnostic imaging and cancer treatment company, where he served as Senior Vice President, Corporate Finance and Chief Accounting Officer. Nick also worked at Deloitte & Touche LLP and is a certified public accountant.

Nick holds a bachelor’s degree in accounting from the George L. Argyros School of Business & Economics at Chapman University.

Howard Derman

Senior Vice President of Human Resources

Howard has over 30 years of human resources experience including a position as Executive Vice President of Human Resources for Apria Healthcare, a $2.1 billion, 13,000 employee provider of home healthcare services and infusion therapies. He also served as Senior Vice President of Human Resources for NBTY, Inc., a $2 billion, 20,000 employee leading global manufacturer and marketer of nutritional supplements. Before that, Howard acted as Senior Vice President of Human Resources and Administration for Sicor Pharmaceuticals, a $500 million manufacturer of generic pharmaceuticals. In March 2009, Howard was named HR Executive of the Year by the National Human Resources Association – Orange County Chapter.

Howard holds a bachelor’s degree in industrial management from Purdue University.

Jeremy Hermanns

Senior Vice President of Digital Marketing

Jeremy has more than 15 years of experience in online marketing, with a particular focus on direct response and brand building. Prior to joining Elements Behavioral Health, Jeremy served as Vice President of Marketing Demand Generation for BigCommerce Pty. Ltd. He also held a position as Vice President of Performance Marketing at Onestop Internet, Inc., where he was responsible for all online and analytics-based marketing initiatives.

Before Onestop, Jeremy served as Director of Online Media at LegalZoom.com. He got his start in advertising as a Media Analyst/Planner at Zentropy Partners (IPG), where he assisted with analytic and planning duties for B2B and B2C online advertising performance for Microsoft, GM and other agency clients. In 2003, he joined Overture as a Category Analyst, where he helped develop the process to identify, segment and drive top service tier account growth and optimization within the direct sales organization.

Jeremy started his online performance marketing career with Yahoo! Search (formerly Overture). After Overture, he served as Director of Search Engine Marketing at TribalDDB, the interactive division of Omnicom’s Global DDB Advertising Agency. He established TribalDDB’s pay-per-click and search engine optimization groups for a diverse client list that includes Mobil Oil, Solvay Labs, Abbott Labs, eHarmony, Wells Fargo, Jose Cuervo, Ameriquest and many more. He serves as a member of the advisory board at Convertro, Inc.

Jeremy is a search engine specialist, certified Google Advertising Professional, and Yahoo! Advertising Ambassador. He earned his bachelor’s degree in communications with a media & technology emphasis from the University of Southern California and an MBA from the George L. Graziadio School of Business and Management at Pepperdine University. He is also a graduate of the Management Development Program from the USC Marshall School of Business.

Michael Evans

Chief Systems Officer

Michael joined Elements Behavioral Health in December 2014 with 20 years of experience in operations, finance and human capital. Michael most recently served as Vice President of Operations and the Chief Compliance and Information Security Officer for Episource Inc., a leading provider of risk adjustment services and solutions for healthcare payers. Under his operational leadership, the company built a new division focusing on BPO solutions for large payers, developed operational units in three countries and grew revenue by 400% over the first two years. Previously, Michael was the Vice President of Operations for Altegra Health Inc., where he led a team of 600 employees and was responsible for driving $42 million in revenue growth.

Michael attended the University of New Mexico, where he studied chemical and environmental engineering in the joint BS/MS program.

Keith Arnold

Senior Vice President of Strategic Development

Keith is a nationally and internationally recognized leader in the field of addictions and behavioral health care. Before joining Elements Behavioral Health, Keith was Executive Director of Sierra Tucson, which he joined in 1995 as Director of Marketing. Under his leadership, Sierra Tucson expanded four-fold and gained recognition as one of the most successful hospitals of its kind in the country at that time. Prior to joining Sierra Tucson, Keith was Director of Client Services for an international management consulting firm.

Edye Bauer, JD

Associate General Counsel

Edye has more than 15 years of experience at AmLaw 100 law firms and as in-house counsel at privately held companies. Prior to joining Elements Behavioral Health, Edye served as Senior Director of Legal Affairs at Lytx, Inc., a privately held technology company in the commercial transportation industry. Prior to that, she was a Partner at several highly regarded law firms in Southern California. Edye has represented companies in various stages of development across several industries, including healthcare, technology, social media and Internet services.

Edye holds bachelor’s degrees in International Relations and East Asian Area Studies from the University of Southern California. She earned her law degree from Stanford University and is a member of the State Bar of California.

Judy Sylvia

Vice President of Access Systems / Call Center

Judy is an experienced healthcare executive who has spent more than a decade developing systems that help clients, families and referents access addiction and behavioral health treatment services. Prior to joining Elements Behavioral Health in 2010, Judy served as Vice President of Business Development for Demand Results, where she managed online marketing efforts for clients in the behavioral healthcare industry. She held the same position at Senior Transitions, where she was responsible for lead generation and qualification and distribution of referrals to 3,000 assisted-living senior communities.

Earlier in her career, Judy worked as Director of the National Resource Center at CRC Health Group. There, she developed the call center from two agents to a staff of over 50. She further customized and deployed their CRM system, and managed a multimillion dollar pay-per-click budget. Judy has also held a position as Director of Admissions at a residential dual diagnosis addiction treatment center.

Judy has a bachelor’s degree in business administration from San Jose State University.

Denny Hooten

Vice President of Admissions Services

Kathie has been in the behavioral health and chemical dependency field for 35 years. Prior to joining Elements Behavioral Health, Kathie served as Director of Corporate Contracting for Aurora Behavioral Health. She began her career at the Long Beach VA Hospital, moving to National Medical Enterprises and then to Charter Medical Corporation, where she worked as Regional Director of Business Development. She has held positions both regionally and nationally in programming, utilization review, denials management, business development and marketing. An expert in negotiations and strategic partnerships, she has consulted with large accountable care organizations and national managed care companies.

Kathie studied psychology at California State University, Long Beach and California School for Professional Psychology.

Kathie Green

Vice President of Managed Care and Payer Engagement

Denny is a seasoned healthcare executive with experience in multi-center operations and global business development. Prior to joining Elements Behavioral Health, Denny served as Director of Integrated Sales at DaVita Healthcare Partners, Inc., where he was responsible for creating a range of competitive service offerings in population health for hospital systems and accountable care organizations. He also enhanced physician management participation through a comprehensive physician leadership curriculum. Denny started his tenure at DaVita in operations, running the UCLA dialysis center with one of the only pediatric units in the country.

Earlier in his career, Denny worked as Director of Business Development at Nutragenetics, where he managed all global sales cycles, marketing, strategic growth initiatives and account management of consumer products at Walmart, Sam’s Club and Herbalife. He also oversaw the global marketing strategy for Africa Harvest, a nonprofit organization dedicated to using technology as a tool to fight hunger, malnutrition and poverty in Africa. In addition, Denny has taught courses in marketing at Otis College of Art and Design, Pepperdine University and Louisiana State University.

Denny holds a bachelor’s degree in digital media from Otis College of Art and Design and an MBA from the George L. Graziadio School of Business and Management at Pepperdine University.
